Four Universities Appoint Women to Dean Positions

mary-schuttenMary C. Schutten was appointed dean of the College of Applied Sciences and Arts at San Jose State University in California. Since 2009, Dr. Schutten has been a professor of movement science and associate dean for students and curriculum at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.

Dr. Schutten is a graduate of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she double majored in mathematics and physical education. She holds a master’s degree in exercise science from California State University, Long Beach and a doctoral degree in physical education from Indiana University.

bergen_photoLori Bergen was named dean of the new College of Media, Communication, and Information at the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has been serving as dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University in Milwaukee. She will begin her new job on July 20.

Dr. Bergen is president-elect of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in mass communication from Indiana University.

GabrielSherine E. Gabriel has been chosen as the next dean of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She will take office in August. Currently, Dr. Gabriel is dean of the Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minnesota. She has been affiliated with the Mayo Medical School since 1983.

Dr. Gabriel is a graduate of the University of Regina in Saskatchewan and the medical school of the University of Saskatchewan. He also holds a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Dianne Harris was named dean of the College of Humanities at the University of Utah. She has been serving as professor of landscape architecture and director of the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the University of Illinois.

Dr. Harris holds a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in architectural history from the University of California, Berkeley. Among her many books is Little White Houses: How the Postwar Home Constructed Race in America (University of Minnesota Press, 2013).
