Honors and Awards for Four Women Scholars

shoemaker_pamelaPamela J. Shoemaker, the John Ben Snow Professor at the Newhouse School of Syracuse University in New York, has been selected to receive the Paul J. Deutschmann Award for Excellence in Research by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. She will be honored at the association’s annual meeting in San Francisco this coming summer.

Professor Shoemaker is the author or co-author of several books including Gatekeeping Theory (Routledge, 2009) and News Around the World Practitioners, Content and the Public (Routledge, 2006). She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ohio University and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Knutson_HeatherHeather Knutson, assistant professor of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, received the Newton Lacy Prize from the American Astronomical Society. She was honored for her “transformational work in the characterization of exponent atmospheres.”

Dr. Knutson joined the faculty at CalTech in 2011. She holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Barbara Voorhies-croppedBarbara Voorhies, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has been chosen to receive the Gender Equity in Anthropology Award from the American Anthropological Association.

Dr. Voorhies joined the faculty at the university in 1971 after earning a Ph.D. at Yale University. In 1975 she co-authored Female of the Species (Columbia University Press).

Fink_JanetJanet Fink, professor of sports management at the University of Massachusetts, has been chosen as the recipient of the 2015 Earle F. Zeigler Lecture Award from the North American Society for Sport Management. Her research focuses on the marketing of female athletes and women’s sports.

Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in 2012, she taught at the University of Connecticut and Ohio State University. Dr. Fink holds a Ph.D. in sport management from Ohio State University.
