In Memoriam: Janet Kaplan, 1945-2014

kaplanJanet Kaplan, a professor of art history and director of curatorial studies at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, died last month in a Philadelphia hospital after suffering cardiac arrest. She was 69 years old.

Dr. Kaplan joined the faculty at Moore College of Art and Design in 1980. She also taught at the Institute of Fine Arts in New York, the University of New Hampshire, and the Vermont College of Fine Arts. The latter is creating an endowed scholarship to honor Dr. Kaplan.

From 1995 to 2002, Professor Kaplan was the executive editor of the College Art Association’s Art Journal. She was the author of Unexpected Journeys: The Art and Life of Remedios Varo (Abbeville Press, 1988).

Professor Kaplan was a native of Chicago. She earned a bachelor’s degree at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.
