Three Women Named to Endowed Chairs at the Stanford University School of Medicine

The Stanford University School of Medicine has announced the appointment of five faculty members to endowed chairs. Three of the faculty members named to endowed chairs are women.

hintzSusan Hintz, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was appointed the Robert L. Hess Family Professor. Dr. Hintz is a neonatologist and perinatal epidemiologist. Dr. Hintz holds a bachelor’s degree, a medical degree, and a master’s degree in epidemiology, all from Stanford University. She joined the Stanford faculty in 2000.

kirkegaardKarla Kirkegaard, was appointed the Violetta L. Horton Research Professor. She has been serving as professor of genetics and professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford. Her research focuses on developing new approaches to target RNA viruses so they do not become resistant to drugs. Dr. Kirkegaard is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she majored in genetics. She holds a Ph.D. biochemistry and molecular biology from Harvard University.

spuntSheri Spunt, a professor of pediatric oncology, was appointed an Endowed Professor of Pediatric Cancer. Dr. Spunt works to improve the treatment of children and young adults with soft tissue sarcomas. Dr. Spunt earned her medical degree at the University of Michigan and completed her residency at the University of California, Los Angeles.
