University of Alabama Scholar Honored by the American Public Health Association

ellenspearsESpeers Bookllen G. Spears, assistant professor in the department of American studies at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, has been selected to receive the 2014 Arthur J. Viseltear Prize for Outstanding Contributions in the History of Public Health. The award, sponsored by the Medical Care Section of the American Public Health Association, will be presented at the group’s annual meeting in New Orleans this November.

Dr. Spears is being honored for her book Baptized in PCBs: Race, Pollution and Justice in an All-American Town (University of North Carolina Press, 2014). The book tells the story of the history of pollution in the city of Anniston, Alabama.

Dr. Spears is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Emory University in Atlanta.
