Berkeley Scholar Named as the Next U.S. Ambassador to Mexico

EchavestePresident Obama has nominated Maria Echaveste as Ambassador to Mexico. If confirmed, she will be the first woman to hold the position.

Echaveste is the director of policy and program development for the Chief Justice Earl Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. From 1998 to 2001, she was deputy chief of staff for President Bill Clinton.

A native of Texas, Echaveste is the daughter of Mexican immigrants. She is a graduate of Stanford University, where she majored in anthropology. She earned a law degree at the University of California, Berkeley.
