Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

money_bagHere is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

knapheideMonmouth College in Illinois received $1.2 million donation from the children of Monmouth alumna Mary MacDill Knapheide. The gift is earmarked for the construction of residential facility for the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women. The gift cover more than half the cost of the project, which is expected to break ground in the spring. Kanpheide was a member of the class of 1935 at the college.

Yale University and New York University have received two grants totaling $200,000 to study gender bias in the online reference source Wikipedia. The grant document states that “an emerging body of research indicates that Wikipedia suffers from systemic gender bias with respect to both contributors and content. How and why is this bias produced?” Conducting the research will be Julia Adams, a professor of sociology at Yale University and Hannah Bruckner, the associate dean of social sciences at the Abu Dhabi campus of New York University.
