University of Louisiana Lafayette Scholar Makes U.S. Team for World Karate Championships

Holly L. Damico is an assistant professor of communications disorders at the University of Louisiana Lafayette. This fall she will do more than teach. Dr. Damico recently was selected as a member of the five-person team who will represent the United States in the 2014 Funakoshi Gichin Cup World Karate-Do Championship in Tokyo this October. The tournament, also known as the Shoto Cup, includes individual and team championships in full-contact karate sparring.

Dr. Damico, who is a graduate of Idaho State University, began karate lessons in 2001 and is now a third-degree black belt. As a doctoral student at the University of Louisiana Lafayette in 2012, she was the collegiate champion at the All-South tournament in New Orleans.
