Julia Garcia to Be Honored by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute

Juliet V. Garcia, president of the University of Texas at Brownsville, has been selected to receive The Chair’s Medallion Award from the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. She will be honored at the group’s 37th annual awards gala in Washington on October 2. President Garcia is being honored for her leadership and service to the Latino community.

Dr. Garcia has served as the university’s president since 1992. Six years earlier, she was the first Mexican-American women to be named president of an American college when she was selected to lead Texas Southmost College.

On August 31, Dr. Garcia is stepping down as president of the University of Texas at Brownsville to serve as director of the University of Texas’ Institute of the Americas. The new institute, which will operate throughout the University of Texas system, will sponsor seminars, next generation leadership programs, public conferences and events and policy programs for consensus building and problem solving.

Dr. Garcia received her doctorate in communication and linguistics from The University of Texas at Austin. Below is a video documenting Dr. Garcia’s career.
