Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

money_bagHere is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Johns Hopkins University received a $2 million donation from Jane and Michael Rice to establish the Jane Rice Survivorship Program in Breast Cancer. The program will provide coordinated, long-term medical care, holistic health services, educational programs for patients and their families and training for healthcare workers on the needs of breast cancer survivors. Jane Rice was diagnosed with breast cancer nearly a quarter of a century ago. Michael Rice is the executive chair of Utz Quality Foods Inc.

Rutgers University-Camden received a grant from the March of Dimes and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses. The grant will support a research study entitled “The Relationship Between Birth Outcomes and Neighborhood Characteristics Within an Urban Population of African American and Hispanic Women.” The study is under the direction of Patricia Suplee, an assistant professor at the Rutgers University School of Nursing-Camden. Dr. Suplee is a graduate of Indiana University and holds a master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in The Bronx, New York, received a $10 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to fund research on how breast cancer cells move and spread in the body. The researchers hope to develop a procedure to predict which breast cancer tumors will metastasize.

Two high-ranking women’s colleges are among 14 institutions of higher education each receiving three-year, $300,000 grants from the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U). The grants are part of the AAC&U’s Teaching to Increase Diversity and Equity in STEM (TIDES) program, which is funded by the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The two women’s colleges participating in the grant program at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.
