Two Women Named University Professors at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh

Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh has announced the appointment of five University Professors, the highest faculty honor bestowed at the university. Two of the five new University Professors are women.

Irene Fonseca has been a member of the Carnegie Mellon faculty since 1987. Most recently, she has been serving as the Mellon College of Science Professor of Mathematics. Professor Fonesca also serves as the director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis at the university. She currently serves as president of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. She is the co-author of Modern Methods in the Calculus of Variations (Springer, 2007). Professor Fonseca is a graduate of the University of Lisbon in Portugal and earned her Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.

Manuela M. Veloso is the Herbert A. Simon Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon, where she specializes in artificial intelligence and robotics. She has been a member of the faculty at the university since 1992. She is the current president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. Professor Veloso holds a master’s degree from the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon, Portugal. She earned a second master’s degree at Boston University and a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.
