Oceanographer Is the New Head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

kathryn-sullivanKathryn Sullivan is the new administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere. The NOAA has an annual budget of $4.7 billion and its 12,000 employees are in all 50 states.

An accomplished oceanographer, she has worked at NOAA since 1993. Earlier in her career, she was an astronaut for 15 years. In 1984, she was the first American woman to walk in space and she served on three shuttle missions, one of which deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.

Dr. Sullivan is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Cruz. She earned a Ph.D. in geology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
