Three Women Academics Win Notable Awards

ruthiegilmoreRuth Wilson Gilmore, a professor of geography in the doctoral program in earth and environmental science at the City University of New York, was named the winner of the 2014 Harold M. Rose Award from the Association of American Geographers. The award recognizes Professor Gilmore’s work to combat racism. Dr. Gilmore is the author of Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California (University of California Press, 2007).

Dr. Gilmore holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. She earned a Ph.D. in economic geography and social theory at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

tanzer_kim_0Kim Tanzer, the Edward E. Elson Professor of Architecture and dean of School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, received the 2014 Distinguished Professor Award from the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

Professor Tanzer joined the faculty at the University of Virginia in 2009. Previously, she had served on the architecture faculty at the University of Florida for 20 years. She is the co-editor of The Green Braid: Towards an Architecture of Ecology, Economy and Equity (Routledge, 2007). Professor Tanzer is a graduate of Duke University and holds a master of architecture degree from North Carolina State University.

Dr.AlbertMichelle A. Albert, the Vivian Allen Beaumont Endowed Professor and chief of cardiovascular medicine and cardiovascular research at Howard University in Washington, D.C., received the 2014 Red Dress Award from Women’s Day magazine and the American Heart Association. The award is given to women who have made significant contributions to the first against heart disease.

Dr. Albert is a graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania and the University of Rochester School of Medicine. She also holds a master of public health degree from Harvard University. Dr. Albert joined the faculty at Howard University in 2012. Previously, she was an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
