Six Women Appointed to Named Professorships at the University of Chicago

The University of Chicago has announced that 12 faculty members have been appointed to named professorships. Six of the faculty members being honored with these posts are women.

Giulia Galli was named the Liew Family Professor in Molecular Engineering. She joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 2013. Previously, she was a professor of chemistry and physics at the University of California, Davis. Earlier, she was the head of the Quantum Simulations Group at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Dr. Galli spent much of her early career conducting research at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne. Professor Galli earned her Ph.D. in physics from the International School for Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy.

Veronica Guerrieri is the inaugural Ronald E. Tarrson Professor of Economics. She joined the faculty at the university’s Booth School of Business in 2006. Professor Guerrieri is an associate editor of the American Economic Review and an associate editor of Theoretical Economics. She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Università Commerciale Luigi Bocconi in Milan, Italy. Dr. Guerrieri earned a Ph.D. in economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Jessica J. Kandel was appointed the Mary Campau Ryerson Professor of Surgery in the Division of Biological Sciences. She is the surgeon-in-chief at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital. She came to the University of Chicago last year after serving as the R. Peter Altman Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics in the Institute for Cancer Genetics at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Dr. Kandel graduated from Yale University in 1981 and earned her medical degree from Columbia University in 1985.

Angela Olinto was named the Homer J. Livingston Professor in Astronomy and Astrophysics in the Physical Science Division. She has conducted extensive research in high-energy cosmic rays at the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina and is now the leader of the U.S. effort to study ultra-energy particles from the International Space Station. Professor Olinto joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1996. She holds a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Diane Yamada is the new Joseph Bolivar DeLee Professor in the Division of Biological Sciences. She is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and is the section chief of gynecologic oncology. Professor Yamada is an expert in minimally invasive ovarian cancer surgery. She joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1999. Dr. Yamada is a graduate of the medical school of the University of California at Los Angeles.

Judith T. Zeitlin has been named the William R. Keenan Jr. Professor of East Asian Languages and Theater and Performance Studies. Professor Zeitlin joined the faculty of the university in 1994. She is the author of The Phantom Heroine: Ghosts and Gender in Seventeenth-Century Chinese Literature (University of Hawaii Press, 2007) and Historian of the Strange: Pu Songling and the Chinese Classical Tale (Stanford University Press, 1993). Professor Zietlin holds bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees, all from Harvard University.
