University of Vermont Scholar to Chair National Commitee on Geological Sciences

melodyburkinsMelody Brown Burkins, director of the Vermont Advanced Computing Core and senior director for research and strategic initiatives at the University of Vermont, has been named chair of the U.S. National Committee to the International Union for Geological Sciences. The committee, part of the Policy and Global Affairs Division of the National Academies, represents American geoscience interests in international scientific meetings. She will serve a three-year term as chair of the committee.

Dr. Burkins is a graduate of Yale University, where she majored in geology. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in earth systems science from Dartmouth College, where her doctoral research focused on life in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica.
