UCLA Study Examines Factors Contributing to the Educational Success of Latinas

longoriaA new report published by the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles examines the factors that lead to the educational success of Latinas. The study was funded by the foundation of actress Eva Longoria.

“We were frustrated to primarily find analysis of what does not work for Latinas, and we wanted to find out what does,” Longoria said. “The findings from this study will help us fine-tune our education work, and we hope others will use this research to support Latina achievement.”

The study found that Latinas who had teachers and school counselors of their own ethnic group and those who are involved in extracurricular activities at school tend to do better academically. Other factors that led to educational success were strong parental involvement and being bilingual.
