Women From World War I Era Honored by Indiana University

golden bookIndiana University in Bloomington maintains a huge “Golden Book” where the names of military veterans associated with the university are recorded. The records go back as far as the War of 1812.

Although the “Golden Book” includes the names of many women, the service of many women was not officially recognized or they were omitted due to administrative error.

Research by doctoral candidate John Summerlot discovered the names of 30 women from the World War I era who should have been included in the “Golden Book” but were not for one reason or another. This past Monday, on Veterans Day, the university held a ceremony in which the women had their named inscribed in the “Golden Book.” Many of the women were military nurses.
