The New President of the Western History Association

whagif copyMargaret Connell-Szasz was elected president of the Western History Association at the group’s 53rd annual conference in Tucson, Arizona. The organization was founded in 1961 and currently has more than 1,100 members. The organization publishes the journal Western Historical Quarterly.

Dr. Connell-Szasz is a professor of history at the University of New Mexico. She previously taught a the University of Exeter in England and the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

Professor Connell-Szasz earned a master’s degree at the University of Washington and holds a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. She is the author of several books including Indian Education in the American Colonies, 1607-1783 (University of New Mexico Press, 1988), Education and the American Indian: The Road to Self-Determination, 1928-1998 (University of New Mexico Press, 1999), and Between Indians and White Worlds: The Cultural Broker (University of Oklahoma Press, 2001).
