Northwestern University Study Examines Gender of 10-K Road Race Participants

A study by researchers at the Northwestern University School of Medicine has found that women outnumber men as participants in the nation’s 10 largest, 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) road races. Researchers examined data of entrants from more than 400,000 runners who participated in 10 races from 2002 to 2011.

The study found that 1.3 million people participated in 10K races each year. According to the data in the study, women began outnumbering men in these races beginning in 2006.

The study was published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
