Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

money_bagHere is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

The Weill Cornell Medical College in New York received a $500,000 grant from MasterCard to support research aimed at finding cures for women’s cancers. The grant will fund the creation of a researcher-in-residence position at the medical school.

The University of Pittsburgh received a $720,000 grant from the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to continue funding of  programs seeking to improvement treatment and survival outcomes for women with breast cancer.

Merck & Co. has announced a $6 million commitment with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to fund 10 programs throughout the United States with the aim of reducing deaths relating to pregnancy. About 900 women die from pregnancy-related death in the United States each year and the death rate has doubled since 1990. More than 40 countries in the world have lower rates of pregnancy-related death than the United States.
