In Memoriam: Shirley Kirkman Osterhout, 1932-2013

OsterhoutShirley Osterhout, a pediatrician and longtime professor and administrator at Duke University School of Medicine, died late last month. She was 81 years old.

Dr. Osterhout was a 1953 graduate of Duke University. When she graduated from the Duke School of Medicine in 1957, she was one of only five women in her class. Over a long career at Duke, she served as an instructor and pediatrician. She was clinical director and medical director of the Duke Poison Control Center. Dr. Osterhout and her colleagues were responsible for designing the first childproof safety cap for medicine containers.

Dr. Osterhout also served as assistant dean for student affairs at the medical school. She retired and assumed the title of professor emerita in 1997.
