Duke Professor Chosen for Book Award in Polish Studies

HolmgrenmodjeskaBeth Holmgren, chair of the department of Slavic and Eurasian studies at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, has been chosen to receive the Kulczycki Book Prize for Polish Studies. She will be presented the award in November at the annual convention of the Association of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies in Boston.

Professor Holmgren is being honored for her book, Starring Madame Modjeska: On Tour in Poland and America (Indiana University Press). Helena Modjeska was a popular Shakespearean actress in both Poland and the United States during the latter half of the nineteenth century.

Dr. Holgrem earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University.
