klitzProfessor Barbara Klitz and a group of 10 graduate students from the University of Rhode Island recently spent 10 days in Peru conducting cervical cancer screening for rural women in the Andes Mountains. The students had recently passed their board certification examinations and were able to conduct their first field tests and analysis of Pap smears on patients in Peru.

Professor Klitz stated, “In the U.S.A., because of the Pap smear, women rarely die from cervical cancer. But in Peru, it is the number one killer of women.”

Professor Klitz has been on the faculty at the University of Rhode Island for the past decade. She is the director of the graduate program in cytopathology.
