Two Women Promoted to Full Professor at Grinnell College

grinnellGrinnell College, the highly rated liberal arts institution in Iowa, has announced the promotion of four faculty members to the ranks for full professor. Two of the four new full professors are women.

S KapilaShuchi Kapila was promoted to full professor of English. She also serves as director of the Center for the Humanities at the college. Dr. Kapila joined the faculty at Grinnell College in 2002 after teaching for four years at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio. She is the author of Educating Seeta: The Anglo-Indian Family Romance and the Poetics of Indirect Rule (Ohio State University Press, 2010).

Professor Kapila earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees at the University of Delhi in India. She holds a Ph.D. from Cornell University.

PurcellSarah Purcell was named full professor of history. She also serves as director of the Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs, International Relations, and Human Rights at the college. She is the author of Sealed With Blood: War, Sacrifice, and Memory in Revolutionary America (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2002).

Professor Purcell is a graduate of Grinnell College. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
