Women Still Vastly Underrepresented in College Sports Administration and Coaching

ucfThe Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport in the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, recently released its annual report card on the progress of women in college sports for the 2011-12 academic year.  The institute assigned an overall grade of B on gender issues to colleges and universities, the same grade as a year ago.

Here are some of the highlights of the report:

• There were six women among the 30 conference commissioners in the NCAA’s Division I but no women among the 11 conferences that make up schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

• There were 84 women who were the head coaches of men’s athletics teams at NCAA Division I schools. They made up 3 percent of the head coaches of men’s teams. In contrast, men made up 61.4 percent of the head coaches of women’s teams in the NCAA Division I.

• Women did much better in assistant coaching positions. Women were 9.9 percent of the assistant coaches of men’s teams in Division I and 48.4 percent of the assistant coaches of women’s teams.

• There were 26 women serving as athletic directors at the 319 Division I schools. Thus, women were 8.2 percent of all athletic directors in Division I.

• Women made up 12.1 percent of the sports information directors at Division I schools.
