An All-Women Team of Oceanographers Study the Agulhas Current in the Indian Ocean

BealIn the past, the field of marine research and oceanography have been dominated by men. But that is beginning to change. Recently, Lisa M. Beal led an all-women team of scientists aboard the research vessel Knorr to study the Agulhas Current in the Indian Ocean.

Dr. Beal is an associate professor of meteorology and physical oceanography at the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science. Joining her on the expedition are colleagues from the University of Miami and the University of Cape Town along with an all-woman team of technicians from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

Below is a brief video of Dr. Beal and her colleagues discussing the expedition.
