Five Women Professors Selected for Prestigious Honors

Sbragia1_1Alberta Sbragia, professor of political science and vice provost for graduate studies at the University of Pittsburgh, was selected to receive the Award for Lifetime Achievement from the European Union Studies Association. Professor Sbragia joined the University of Pittsburgh faculty in 1974.

Dr. Sbragia is a graduate of Holy Names College in Oakland, California. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Wisconsin. She is the author of Debt Wish: Entrepreneurial Cities, U.S. Federalism, and Economic Development (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1996).

heather_ErwinHeather E. Erwin, associate professor in the department of kinesiology and health promotion at the University of Kentucky, received the Helen M. Heitmann Curriculum and Instruction Young Scholar Award form the National Association for Sport and Physical Education.

Dr. Erwin is a graduate of Central Missouri State University. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas and a Ph.D. in pedagogical kinesiology from the University of Illinois.

organic lifestyle photographersSarah E. Cowie, an assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Nevada at Reno, received the John L. Cotter Award from the Society for Historical Archaeology. Her research focuses on conflict between Native Americans and the federal government over historical sites.

Dr. Cowie is the author of The Plurality of Power: An Archaeology of Industrial Capitalism (Springer, 2011). She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Arizona.

f-sheila-craneSheila Crane, assistant professor of architectural history at the University of Virginia, received the Spiro Kostof Book Award from the Society of Architectural Historians. She was honored for her book Mediterranean Crossroads: Marseille and Modern Architecture (University of Minnesota Press, 2011).

Dr. Crane is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

waydaValerie Wayda, chair of the department of coaching and teaching studies in the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences at West Virginia University, received the 2013 Fellow Award from the North American Society of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, Sport, and Dance Professionals.

Dr. Wayda is a graduate of the State University of New York at Cortland. She holds a master’s degree and an educational doctorate from West Virginia University.
