College Women Are More Likely to Binge Drink Than Their Male Peers

coverA new study by researchers at Harvard University finds that college women are more likely to be binge drinkers than men in college. The study followed the drinking behavior of 992 first-year college students over a two-year period. The results showed that women tended to exceed the National Institutes of Health recommended maximum consumption level for alcohol per week more often than men. And over the two-year period, men’s binge drinking tended to decrease, while women’s binge drinking did not.

The study stated, “With women’s greater tendency to exceed weekly guidelines than men, there may be long-term implications for women in particular. Women are at greater risk than men of engaging in drinking habits during college that are more likely to result in long-term harm.”

The study, “Sex Differences in College Student Adherence to NIAAA Drinking Guidelines,” was published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. The article may be accessed here.
