Salem College’s Tekla Ali Johnson Wins Book Award

71m2AJu9kTL._SL1000_Tekla Ali Johnson, an assistant professor of history at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, received the award for outstanding scholarly publication in Africana studies from the National Council of Black Studies. Dr. Ali Johnson was recognized for her book, Free Radical: Ernest Chambers, Black Power and the Politics of Race (Texas Tech University Press, 2012). The award was presented at the council’s national convention in Indianapolis.

Before joining the faculty at Salem College, Dr. Ali Johnson taught at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro and Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte. She holds a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in history with an emphasis in African American studies, all from the University of Nebraska.

    Tekla Ali Johnson’s book, FREE RADICAL, also received a Nebraska Book Award for Biography October 26, 2013. This award was presented at the Nebraska State Historical Society in Lincoln, Nebraska.
