Women Make Up Almost Two Thirds of All Employees at Duke University

dukeA new survey of the employees of Duke University, finds that women make up 65 percent of the total workforce. According to Martha Reeves, a visiting professor in women’s studies and sociology at Duke, the results are not surprising considering women are overrepresented in nursing, clerical, housekeeping, and dining positions, all of which have a large number of jobs at Duke. For example, in nursing fields of the Duke University Health System, 5,039 of the 5,563 employees are women.

“We are slowly seeing more men join the field of nursing, but I think the public today would still find it very odd if a health care organization did not have a very high proportion of women,” said Mary Ann Fuchs, chief nursing officer for Duke University Health System.
