In Memoriam: Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, 1959-2013

Nolen-Hoeksema_Susan_01Susan Nolen-Hoeksema, chair of the department of psychology at Yale University, died in Yale-New Haven Hospital after heart surgery associated with a blood infection. She was 53 years old.

Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema was an expert on depression among women and girls. She was the founding editor of the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology.

Professor Nolen-Hoeksema was the author of Eating, Drinking, Overthinking: The Toxic Triangle of Food, Alcohol, and Depression and How Women Can Break Free (Henry Holt, 2005), The Power of Women: Harness Your Unique Strengths at Home, at Work, and in Your Community (Times Books, 2010) and Women Who Think Too Much: How to Break Free of Overthinking and Reclaim Your Life (Henry Holt, 2003).

Dr. Nolen-Hoeksema joined the Yale faculty in 2004. Previously, she taught at Stanford University and the University of Michigan. A 1982 graduate of Yale University, she earned a Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.
