Claire Sterk Named Provost at Emory University

sterkClaire Elizabeth Sterk was appointed provost at Emory University in Atlanta. She has been serving as acting provost since November and was selected from a pool of four finalists. Since 2000, she has been the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Public Health at Emory and has been a member of the faculty since 1995.

Before taking over as acting provost, Dr. Sterk had been serving since 2005 as senior vice provost for academic planning and faculty development. Earlier, she had served for five years as chair of the department of behavioral sciences and health education and is the former dean for research at Emory’s Rollins School of Public Health.

A native of The Netherlands, Dr. Sterk holds doctoral degrees in anthropology and sociology from the University of Utrecht and Erasmus University in Rotterdam, respectively.
