Joanne Meyerowitz Named to an Endowed Chair at Yale

Joanne Meyerowitz was named the Arthur Unobskey Professor of History and American Studies at Yale University. She also serves as chair of the American studies program and is co-director of the Yale Research Initiative on the History of Sexualities.

Dr. Meyerowitz joined the Yale faculty in 2004. She previously taught at the University of Cincinnati and Indiana University. For five years, she served as editor of the Journal of American History. Much of Professor Meyerowitz’s scholarly work involves women’s history. She is the author of Women Adrift: Independent Wage Earners in Chicago, 1880-1930 (University of Chicago Press, 1988) and How Sex Changed: A History of Transsexuality in the United States (Harvard University Press, 2002). She is the editor of Not June Cleaver: Women and Gender in Postwar America, 1945-1960 (Temple University Press, 1994).

Professor Meyerowitz is a graduate of the University of Chicago. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Stanford University.
