In Memoriam: Comfort Cary Richardson (1918-2012)

Comfort Carey Richardson, professor of physical education emerita at Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, died at her home in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. She was 94 years old.

In 1969 Richardson was hired to begin a program of physical education at Kirkland College, which later merged with Hamilton College. She also served as coach of the tennis team and dean of student affairs at Kirkland College. When Kirkland merged with Hamilton in 1978, there were four varsity sports for women. Today, there are 15 varsity sports for women at Hamilton.

Richardson, who was a 1940 graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, taught at Hamilton until 1982 when she retired with her husband, Channing B. Richardson, to Pennsylvania. Channing Richardson was the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs at Hamilton. He died in 2009.
