Columbia University Adds Five Women to Its Faculty of Arts and Sciences

The College of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University in New York City has 30 new faculty members this fall. Of the new hires, only five are women. There are now 854 members of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Susan Bernofsky is an associate professor of creative writing. She was a visiting associate professor at Queens College of the City University of New York. Previously, for seven years she was an assistant professor at Bard College.

Dr. Bernofsky is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University. She holds a master or fine arts degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Princeton University.

Sonya T. Dhyrman will join the department of earth and environmental sciences in January. She has been serving as an associate scientist of biology at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

Dr. Dhyrman is a graduate of Dartmouth College. She holds a Ph.D. in marine biology from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.

Lauren A. Hannah is an assistant professor of statistics. She was conducting postdoctoral research in statistics at Duke University.

Dr. Hannah holds a bachelor’s degree in the classics and a Ph.D. in operations research and financial engineering, both from Princeton University.

Heidi Julavits is an associate professor of practice in the writing department of the School of Arts. She is the author of the novels The Vanishers (Doubleday, 2012), The Uses of Enchantment (Doubleday, 2006), The Effect of Living Backwards (Putnam, 2003), and The Mineral Palace (Putnam, 2000).

Julavits is a graduate of Dartmouth College and earned a master of fine arts degree from Columbia University.

Tamar Lando is a new assistant professor of philosophy. She recently completed her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley.

Dr. Lando is a graduate of Stanford University and holds a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley.
