Uta Poiger to Lead the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University

Uta G. Poiger, professor and chair of the department of history at Northeastern University in Boston, was named interim dean of the university’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities. She will take on her new role on November 15. She is replacing Georges Van Den Abbeele, founding dean of the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, who is leaving to become dean of the School of Humanities at the University of California at Irvine.

Dr. Poiger joined the faculty at Northeastern in July 2011. Previously, she held the Giovanni and Anne Costigan Endowed Professorship in History at the University of Washington.

Professor Poiger is a graduate of Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat in Freilburg, Germany. She earned a master’s degree in American history from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a Ph.D. in history from Brown University.
