Three Women Named to Endowed Chairs at Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College has named 14 faculty members to endowed chairs. Only three of the 14 professors named to endowed chairs are women.

Ada Cohen, who has been serving as a professor of art history, was appointed to the Israel Evans Professorship in Oratory and Belles Letters. Professor Cohen is a graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and holds a Ph.D. in art history from Harvard University. She is the author of Art in the Era of Alexander the Great (Cambridge University Press, 2010).

Lynn A. Higgins was named the Edward Tuck Professor of French Language and Literature. She also serves as associate dean of the faculty for international and interdisciplinary studies. Professor Higgins is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.

Silvia Spitta, professor of Spanish and Portuguese, was appointed the Robert E. Maxwell 1923 Professor in Arts and Sciences. She is the author of Misplaced Objects: Migrating Collections and Recollections in Europe and the Americas (University of Texas Press, 2009) and Between Two Waters: Narratives of Transculturation in Latin America (Rice University Press, 1995). Professor Spitta is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Oregon.
