Three Academic Women Honored With Awards

Annette Yancy, academic counselor at the Center for Advising and Counseling at Louisiana State University, has been selected to receive the Outstanding Advising Award from the National Academic Advising Association. She will receive the award at the association’s annual convention in Nashville in October.

Yancy has been on the staff at LSU since 1989. She is a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, where she majored in psychology. Yancy earned a master’s degree at Western Michigan University.

Janine Oshiro, an instructor of English at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, Hawaii, was awarded the Elliott Cades Award for Literature from the Hawaii Literary Arts Council. She was honored for her collection of poems, Pier (Alice James Books, 2011).

Oshiro is a graduate of Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. She holds a master’s degree from Portland State University in Oregon and a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa’s Writer’s Workshop.

Tessa West, an assistant professor of psychology at New York University, was selected to receive the 2012 Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. She will receive her award at the society’s annual meeting in New Orleans this coming January. She is being honored for her research on cross-group interactions between Whites and racial and ethnic minorities.

Dr. West is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara. She holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Connecticut.
