University Study Finds No Connection Between Epidurals and Maternal Interpartum Fever

Maternal intrapartum fever (MIF) can lead to complications in newborns. It has been widely believed that epidural analgesia during labor can increase the risk of MIF.

But a new study by researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham has found that epidural analgesia has no effect on maternal body temperature. The data seems to point to long labor and high body weight as more likely causes of MIF.

The study was published in the August 2012 issue of Anesthesiology.
