University of Edinburgh Honored for Effort to Increase Women Faculty in STEM Fields

The department of chemistry at the University of Edinburgh is the second academic department in the United Kingdom to win the Athena SWAN Charter Gold Award. The award is given to university departments that have made a concerted effort to address the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields. The chemistry department at the University of York is the only other academic department in the United Kingdom that has won the gold award.

Seven department were awarded silver awards and 11 departments achieved a bronze award. Since the program began in 2005, 52 departments have won silver awards and 27 departments have won bronze awards.
