Princeton Hires 10 Women to Its Faculty

Princeton University has announced the hiring of 26 new members of its faculty. Of the 26 new faculty members, 10 are women. Two of the new faculty members were hired as full professors, one is an associate professor, and seven are assistant professors.

Sophie Morel was appointed professor of mathematics. Since 2009, she was a professor at Harvard University and a member of the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. From 2005 to 2009, she was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Professor Morel is a specialist in number theory, algebraic geometry, and representation theory. She is a graduate of the École Normale Supérieure and holds a Ph.D. from the Université Paris-Sud.

Eve Ostriker was named professor of astrophysical sciences. Since 1996, she has served on the faculty at the University of Maryland at College Park. A graduate of Harvard University, Professor Ostriker holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Erika Milam is a new associate professor of history at Princeton. She has been on the faculty at the University of Maryland since 2008. A graduate of Carleton College, she holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Milam is author of Looking for a Few Good Males: Female Choice in Evolutionary Biology (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2010).

Liora Halperin was named assistant professor of Near Eastern studies. She specializes in the social and cultural history of Israel. Dr. Halperin is a graduate of Harvard University and holds a Ph.D. from the University of California-Los Angeles.

Ning Lin was appointed assistant professor of environmental engineering. She has been serving as a postdoctoral fellow at MIT. A graduate of Huazong University of Science and Technology, Dr. Lin earned a master’s degree from Texas Tech University and a Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Mariangela Lisanti was named assistant professor of physics. She has been serving as a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton. Dr. Lisanti is a graduate of Harvard University and holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Rosina Lozano is a new assistant professor of history who specializes in Latino/Latina history. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Stanford, a master’s degree from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.

Teresa Shawcross was hired as an assistant professor of history whose research focuses on Byzantine history. She has been teaching at Amherst College and Mount Holyoke College. Dr. Shawcross is a graduate of Université de Paris III-Sorbonne and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.

Irene Small was named an assistant professor of art and archaeology. A specialist in contemporary art and criticism, she has been serving on the faculty at the University of Illinois. Dr. Small is a graduate of Brown University and holds a Ph.D. from Yale University.

Corina Tarnita was appointed assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. A specialist in theoretical biology, she is a junior fellow at Harvard University, where she earned her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees.
