Columbia Professor to Be Awarded the Kyoto Prize

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, University Professor at Columbia University in New York City, has been selected to receive the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy from the Inamori Foundation. The prize known as the “Nobel of the Arts,” is given to individuals who have contributed significantly to the scientific, cultural, and spiritual betterment of mankind in categories of advanced technology, basic sciences, and arts and philosophy.

Professor Spivak will receive a 20-karat gold medal and a $630,000 cash prize at ceremonies in Kyoto, Japan, in November.

Dr. Spivak is the author of numerous books including her latest work, An Aesthetic Education in the Era of Globalization (Harvard University Press, 2012).
