Vanderbilt Football Coach Apologizes for Comments About Wives

Vanderbilt University’s head football coach, James Franklin, was forced to apologize for comments he made on a local radio program. Franklin stated, “I will not hire an assistant coach until I’ve seen his wife. If she looks the part, then you got a chance to get hired. That’s part of the deal.”

Franklin went on to explain why he believed that having an attractive wife was an important asset for an assistant coach: “There’s a very strong correlation between having the confidence, going up and talking to a woman, and being quick on your feet and having some personality and confidence and being fun and articulate, than it is walking into a high school and recruiting a kid and selling him.”

After vice chancellor of athletics at Vanderbilt David Williams criticized the remarks, Franklin sent out a message on Twitter which read, in part, “My foot does not taste good.”
