Two Longtime Deans Stepping Down

Virginia McLaughlin, dean of the School of Education at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, has announced that she will step down at the end of the 2012-13 academic year. She has served as dean since 1995. Dr. McLaughlin will take a sabbatical for one year and then return to William and Mary as a member of the faculty.

Dr. McLaughlin is a graduate of the College of William and Mary. She holds a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and a doctorate from the University of Memphis. She began her career as a public school teacher in South Carolina. She then taught at Clemson University and Old Dominion University.

Linda Maxson, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa is leaving her post on June 30. She has been dean for 15 years. Dr. Maxson will return to the faculty as a professor of biology.

Dr. Maxson is a native of New York City. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in biology at San Diego State University. She holds a Ph.D. in genetics from a joint doctoral program with San Diego State University and the University of California at Berkeley.

Prior to coming to the University of Iowa, Dr. Maxson taught at the University of Tennessee, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of Illinois.
