Virginia Tech Scholar Wins Book Award from the Appalachian Studies Association

Emily Satterwhite, assistant professor in the department of religion and culture at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, received the Weatherford Award from the Appalachian Studies Association and Berea College. Dr. Satterwhite was honored for the best nonfiction book in Appalachian studies published in 2011. Her book, Dear Appalachia: Readers, Identity, and Popular Fiction Since 1878 (University of Kentucky Press), looks at how readers of fiction set in Appalachia view the region.

Dr. Satterwhite has been on the faculty at Virginia Tech since 2005. She is a graduate of Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in American studies from Emory University in Atlanta.
