Penn Professor Honored by the Organization of American Historians

Serena Maveri, professor of law and history at the University of Pennsylvania, received the 2012 Darlene Clark Hine Award from the Organization of American Historians. She was honored for her book Reasoning From Race: Feminism, Law and the Civil Rights Revolution (Harvard University Press). The award is given to the year’s best book on African American women’s history.

The award panel called the book, “a brilliant excavation of the role that analogies between sexual and racial discrimination have played in legal battles over women’s rights.”

Professor Mayeri is a graduate of Harvard Law School. She holds a Ph.D. in history from Yale University.
