Four Women Scholars Chosen to Receive Notable Awards

Catherine F. Kane, professor of nursing at the University of Virginia, has been selected to receive the 2012 Hildegard Peplau Award from the American Nurses Association. This award, recognizing lifetime achievement, is given to scholars focusing on psychosocial and psychiatric nursing care. Dr. Kane has been on the faculty at UVA for 20 years.

Dr. Kane is a graduate of St. Louis University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Kansas. She holds a master’s degree from Pennsylvania State University and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Rochester.

Candy Carmel-Gilfilen, assistant professor of interior design at the University of Florida, received the 2012 Teaching Excellence Award from the Interior Design Educator Council.

Professor Carmel-Gilfilen holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Miami University.

Susan D. Martin, professor of classics and provost, at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the annual meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South. She was honored for her scholarship on the social and legal history of the Roman Empire and for her leadership in the classics.

Dr. Martin has been on the faculty at the University of Tennessee for more than 30 years. She is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in classical studies from the University of Michigan.

Betty Press, an adjunct professor of photography at the University of Southern Mississippi, has been selected to receive the 2012 Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters Award in Photography. She will be presented the award at the Mississippi Museum of Art on June 9.

Press’ latest collection of photographs was published in 2011 in the book, I Am Because We Are: African Wisdom in Image and Proverb.
