In Memoriam: Lynne D. Gordon (1946-2012)

Lynne D. Gordon, professor emerita of history at the University of Rochester, died earlier this month after a long battle with cancer. She was 65 years old.

Professor Gordon was an expert on the history of women in American higher education. She was the author of the 1990 book, Gender and Higher Education in the Progressive Era (Yale University Press).

Dr. Gordon was a founding member of the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Studies and from 1994 to 2000 she was director of the Gender and Society Group at the University of Rochester. She first joined the faculty at the university in 1983. Previously, she had taught at Bowdoin College, Northern Illinois University, and Princeton University. She retired from teaching in 2010.

Professor Gordon was a graduate of Barnard College in New York City. She held a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Chicago.
