In Memoriam: Fatma M. Helmy (1927-2012)

Fatma M. Helmy, professor of biological sciences and founder of the Minority Access to Research Careers Program at Delaware State University in Dover, died last week at her home in Smyrna, Delaware. She was 84 years old.

Professor Helmy joined the faculty at Delaware State in 1975 and taught through the spring 2011 semester. Previously, she taught at Tulane University, the University of New Orleans, and the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

A native of Egypt, she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in hematology and histology at the University of Cairo. She held a Ph.D. from Tulane University.
