Households Headed by Single Women See Larger Declines in Income

The U.S. Census Bureau reports that in 2010 the median income of all households in the United States was $61,544. The median income of married-couple families was $72,751. For single-parent families headed by a woman, the median household income was $32,031. This is just over one half of the median income for all households.

Futhermore, the median income for single-parent families headed by a woman declined by 3.3 percent from 2009 to 2010. The median income for all households dropped by 1.2 percent and there was only a minor 0.4 percent decline in median income for married-couple families.
